‘Resident Evil’ Eyes Huge $80 Million Worldwide Opening Weekend
The new Resident Evil reboot is expected to give the box office a major boost this weekend, with early projections pointing to a worldwide debut of up to $80 million.
Industry estimates suggest the film could earn between $40 million and $50 million in North America, with an additional $31 million from international markets. If those figures hold, it would mark one of the strongest openings in the franchise’s history.
Directed by Zach Cregger, the latest installment has generated significant buzz among horror fans and moviegoers. In addition to attracting longtime Resident Evil followers, the film is also drawing attention from audiences familiar with Cregger’s previous work.
One of the biggest factors working in the movie’s favor is its critical reception. The reboot has earned some of the strongest reviews the franchise has ever seen, a notable shift from earlier Resident Evil films, which often received mixed or negative responses from critics.
The Resident Evil series has remained a major global brand for more than two decades, with seven previous films collectively earning over $1.2 billion worldwide. The franchise’s previous domestic opening record was set by Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010.
Internationally, the film is launching across dozens of markets, with key territories including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Japan, Australia, Spain, Brazil, Italy, and South Korea expected to contribute significantly to its opening weekend performance. Additional releases in several countries, including Japan and China, are scheduled for later dates.
The movie was produced with a reported budget of around $75 million and is opening in approximately 3,000 theaters across North America. Industry analysts believe even a lower-end debut would still rank among the best openings the franchise has ever achieved.
Meanwhile, other films arriving in theaters this weekend include The Weight, starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, and the animated family feature Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.
With strong reviews, franchise recognition, and growing audience interest, Resident Evil appears well-positioned to become one of the biggest box-office releases of the fall season.
