Kathleen Turner Responds to Michael Douglas’ Revelation About Their Past Romance

Actor Michael Douglas has revealed that he and Kathleen Turner were involved in a romantic relationship while filming the 1984 adventure classic Romancing the Stone, ending decades of speculation about their on-screen chemistry.

The revelation appears in an excerpt from Douglas’ upcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, where he reflects on his personal life and career. According to the actor, he and Turner developed a relationship during the production of the film while he was separated from his then-wife, Diandra Douglas.

Douglas explained that both he and Diandra were living separate lives at the time and that his connection with Turner grew naturally while they worked closely together on set.

Douglas Opens Up About Long-Rumored Relationship

In the memoir excerpt, Douglas said audiences had long suspected there was more than friendship between him and Turner because of their strong on-screen chemistry. Over the years, both actors consistently denied having a romantic relationship despite starring together in several projects, including Romancing the Stone, The Jewel of the Nile, The War of the Roses, and later The Kominsky Method.

According to Douglas, the public explanation they shared for years was that they were close friends with undeniable chemistry but never became romantically involved.

He now says that version of events was not accurate and that the two did, in fact, have a relationship during the filming of Romancing the Stone.

Kathleen Turner Reacts

Following the publication of the memoir excerpt, Turner responded to the renewed attention surrounding the decades-old revelation.

In a statement shared with People, the actress appeared unfazed by the news, joking about the reaction to events that took place more than 40 years ago.

Turner said she has great affection for Douglas and added that she is looking forward to reading his memoir.

Why the Relationship Remained Private

Douglas explained that he chose not to speak publicly about the relationship for many years because he wanted to protect his family, particularly his wife and son at the time.

He also claimed that the romance was kept so private that even director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Danny DeVito were unaware of it.

According to Douglas, the relationship developed gradually through their close collaboration, shared experiences during production, and mutual admiration for one another.

Relationship Came to an End

The actor also recalled a visit from Diandra during filming, saying she became concerned about his relationship with Turner and spoke directly with the actress.

Douglas wrote that differing views about the status of his marriage created uncertainty and ultimately influenced the situation. He said Turner did not want to become involved in complications surrounding his marriage.

As a result, the relationship ended, and Douglas later reconciled with Diandra.

Decades of Speculation Revisited

For years, fans have pointed to the natural chemistry between Douglas and Turner as one of the reasons Romancing the Stone became such a success. The pair remained one of Hollywood’s most memorable screen partnerships, leading many to wonder whether their connection extended beyond the cameras.

With Douglas now addressing the subject in his memoir, a long-standing Hollywood rumor has finally been confirmed, though Turner’s response suggests she views the matter as a small chapter from a much earlier time in both of their lives.
