Brewers Designate Pitcher for Assignment After Three Seasons Ahead of MLB Playoffs

Brewers Designate Rob Zastryzny for Assignment as Playoffs Near

With the 2026 MLB regular season entering its final stretch, the Milwaukee Brewers continue to lead the National League standings and remain on course for the league’s top playoff seed.

The Brewers have already secured their division title and currently hold a three-game advantage over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the No. 1 seed. Finishing at the top would give Milwaukee home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs.

Amid their strong campaign, the club has made a roster move involving veteran left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny. According to reports, the Brewers have designated the 34-year-old for assignment after a season heavily affected by injuries.

Zastryzny spent most of 2026 with Triple-A Nashville and was limited to just 10 appearances due to various health setbacks. As a result, he did not make an appearance for Milwaukee at the major league level this season.

The left-hander made his MLB debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and later spent time with the New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the Brewers organization. Throughout his career, he has frequently moved between the major and minor leagues while working to maintain a spot on an MLB roster.

During the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Zastryzny proved to be a reliable option for Milwaukee, posting a 2.12 ERA across 35 appearances while recording 25 strikeouts in nearly 30 innings of work.

Following the latest roster decision, Zastryzny is expected to become a free agent. As he approaches his 35th birthday and continues his recovery from shoulder and trapezius injuries, questions remain about whether he will pursue another opportunity in professional baseball.

While another minor-league contract remains a possibility, retirement could also be a consideration as the veteran pitcher evaluates the next step in his career.
