Hyrox World Champion Reflects on Controversial Decision to Stay in Race
Hyrox world champion Joanna Wietrzyk has spoken publicly for the first time after a widely discussed incident during a recent competition in Beijing, where she continued racing despite suffering a medical issue on the course.
Five days after the event, the 22-year-old athlete released a statement apologizing to fellow competitors, spectators, event organizers, and the wider Hyrox community. Wietrzyk said she felt completely healthy before the race and had no indication that anything was wrong when the competition began.
Looking back, she acknowledged that continuing the race was a mistake and said she now believes she should have stepped away from the competition.
“I take responsibility for my decision to continue,” she said, adding that she regrets any discomfort or disruption caused by her actions during the event.
Wietrzyk also announced that she would voluntarily withdraw her result from the competition and forfeit the points she earned, despite crossing the finish line first.
The athlete thanked supporters who reached out with messages of encouragement and said she plans to take time away from the spotlight to recover and reflect on the experience.
The incident occurred during a Hyrox competition in Beijing, where Wietrzyk competed in the 16–24 age category. Despite the setback, she completed the race and recorded the fastest time in her division.
Hyrox, a fitness competition that combines running with functional workout stations, has grown rapidly in popularity worldwide. Athletes complete a series of one-kilometre runs interspersed with exercises such as rowing, sled pushes, burpees, and wall balls.
The incident sparked significant debate online, with some critics questioning whether competitors facing similar situations should be required to leave the course for health and safety reasons.
In response to the discussion, Hyrox officials acknowledged the need for clearer procedures in handling unusual situations during events as the sport continues to expand globally.
The controversy has since prompted conversations about athlete welfare, competition rules, and how organizers should respond when unexpected medical issues arise during races.
