Lahore: The Punjab government has intensified security preparations ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned long march toward Islamabad, introducing a series of measures aimed at maintaining law and order across the province.
Authorities have imposed a 13-day ban on public gatherings throughout Punjab. Under the order, assemblies, rallies, processions and gatherings of five or more people at public places, roads and open areas will not be allowed during the restriction period.
The notification also prohibits the carrying or display of weapons and bans activities that encourage participation in unlawful gatherings. However, religious and family events, including weddings, funeral prayers, burials and gatherings at places of worship, have been exempted from the restrictions.
According to officials, law enforcement and intelligence agencies have reported potential security threats, warning that public events and large gatherings could become targets for militant activity.
As part of the security plan, the Punjab Home Department has requested the federal government to temporarily suspend or limit mobile phone and internet services in selected areas of Rawalpindi and Attock from September 27 onward. The request covers locations including Taxila, Wah, Thallian, Chakri and several nearby areas.
Officials say the move was recommended by police authorities to help maintain public order and support security operations during the planned demonstrations.
In a separate development, the provincial government has also sought the deployment of Pakistan Rangers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali until October 5. The request was approved during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order.
Under the proposal, additional Rangers personnel will be stationed in the four districts to assist local law enforcement agencies in managing security arrangements.
Meanwhile, several PTI leaders and workers have reportedly been taken into custody in recent days as authorities continue preparations ahead of the march.
Sources familiar with the situation also indicated that major transport routes, including sections of the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway, could face temporary closures if required for security reasons.
The measures come as political activity increases and authorities seek to prevent any disruption to public safety during the planned PTI march.
