Japan has pledged a grant of approximately $16.4 million to support flood protection efforts in Pakistan, with a focus on strengthening infrastructure in Sindh province.
The agreement was signed in Islamabad on September 7 under the initiative titled “Project for Flood Protection and Dike Improvement on the Indus River in Sindh Province.” The funding amounts to 2.58 billion Japanese yen and is intended to enhance flood defense measures in vulnerable areas.
A major portion of the grant will be used to upgrade and reinforce the Old Abad Bund in Larkana, situated along the right bank of the Indus River. The project aims to improve safety for communities that are regularly exposed to flooding and related risks.
The agreements were signed between Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and representatives of the Japanese government, while the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will play a key role in implementing and supporting the project.
Pakistani officials welcomed Japan’s continued cooperation and assistance in development initiatives, acknowledging the country’s longstanding support in various sectors. Japanese Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi also reiterated Japan’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Pakistan and supporting projects that contribute to sustainable development.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to enhance flood resilience in Sindh, reduce the impact of future flood events, and provide stronger protection for communities living near the Indus River.
