Bills Beat Lions 41-31 as Buffalo Starts Season 2-0
The Buffalo Bills kicked off a new chapter in style, defeating the Detroit Lions 41-31 in their first game at the team’s new stadium. Buffalo came out firing early, building a commanding lead before holding off a late challenge from Detroit to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Bills wasted no time making an impact, scoring on their opening drive and adding another touchdown after forcing the Lions to punt on their first possession. While Detroit fought back throughout the night, Buffalo maintained control and secured an impressive victory against one of the NFC’s stronger teams.
Josh Allen Leads the Way Again
Quarterback Josh Allen delivered another standout performance, showcasing both his arm and his mobility. He opened the game with several key runs, including a one-yard rushing touchdown, and later added three touchdown passes in the first half.
Allen connected with Joshua Palmer on a 43-yard score, found Dawson Knox for another touchdown, and hit Dalton Kincaid in the end zone as Buffalo built a comfortable lead. He continued to guide productive drives in the second half and finished with five total touchdowns three passing and two rushing.
The Bills star completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards while adding 72 rushing yards on 11 carries.
James Cook Powers the Ground Game
Running back James Cook was another major contributor, putting together a dominant outing on the ground. He surpassed 100 rushing yards before halftime and repeatedly broke through Detroit’s defense with explosive runs.
One of his biggest moments came after the Lions cut into Buffalo’s lead. Cook responded by ripping off gains of 20, 35, and six yards on consecutive plays, helping set up another Bills touchdown.
He finished the game with 134 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 carries while also contributing as a receiver.
Dalton Kincaid Continues Strong Start
Tight end Dalton Kincaid once again proved to be one of Buffalo’s most reliable offensive weapons. The former first-round pick consistently found openings in Detroit’s defense and stepped up even more after injuries affected the receiving corps.
Kincaid ended the night with seven receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown, narrowly missing a second straight 100-yard game. His improvement as both a receiver and blocker continues to strengthen Buffalo’s offense.
Defensive Concerns Remain
Despite the victory, Buffalo’s defense still showed areas that need improvement. The pass rush and coverage units were inconsistent at times, allowing Detroit to create several big plays through the air.
The Bills are still adjusting to defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard’s system, and while there were positive moments, the unit remains a work in progress.
Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson also had a relatively quiet game, recording only one tackle and making little impact in coverage or run support.
Depth Players Step Up
Buffalo received encouraging contributions from several players who had previously struggled to establish themselves.
Wide receiver Keon Coleman caught all six passes thrown his way for 63 yards, while defensive lineman DeWayne Carter impressed with several strong plays against both the run and pass. Carter’s performance was especially important after veteran defensive tackle Ed Oliver was ruled out with a hip injury.
Their efforts provided a boost for a Bills team looking to build quality depth heading into the long season.
Injuries Cast a Shadow
While Buffalo celebrated the win, injuries remained a concern. Ed Oliver suffered a hip issue during pregame warmups, and wide receiver DJ Moore left the game with a shoulder injury.
The Bills now have 10 days before their next matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, giving key players additional time to recover.
Mixed Night for Landon Jackson
Defensive end Landon Jackson endured a difficult outing after showing promise in the previous game. He recorded two tackles but struggled for much of the night and was penalized for tripping late in the first half, helping Detroit add points before the break.
While some young players improved their standing, Jackson’s performance highlighted areas that still need development.
Overall, Buffalo’s offense stole the spotlight as the Bills opened their new stadium with a statement win, moving to 2-0 and strengthening their early position as one of the NFL’s top contenders.
