Cardinals Reportedly Exploring Trade for Marvin Harrison Jr. as Receiver Set to Miss Lions Game
The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly been discussing a potential trade involving wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions. According to reports, Harrison is expected to be inactive for Sunday's game, with his possible destination yet to be revealed.
ESPN reporters Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported the developing situation. Although the Houston Texans have reportedly been involved in discussions, Schefter said a team source would neither confirm nor deny Houston's interest.
The Indianapolis Colts also reportedly looked into the possibility of acquiring Harrison. Mike Chappell of Fox 59 and CBS 4 Sports reported that the team had done its due diligence, but subsequent reporting from ESPN's Stephen Holder indicated that Indianapolis would not be his destination.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz added that the Cardinals and the unnamed team involved preferred to keep the potential trade destination private until both clubs had completed their Week 5 games.
Cardinals Reportedly Receiving Trade Interest
The latest developments follow a report from Tom Pelissero of The Ringer that Arizona had received several calls from teams interested in Harrison.
According to Pelissero, the Cardinals were seeking a second-round draft pick, potentially along with an additional mid-round selection, in exchange for the young receiver.
Despite the reported interest, general manager Monti Ossenfort was not said to be eager to move on from Harrison. Arizona invested the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to select him, and the organization had high expectations for his future.
However, his limited role in the offense this season may have increased the likelihood of a trade discussion.
Harrison's Role Has Shrunk This Season
Harrison has struggled to make a significant impact during the opening weeks of the current season under new head coach Mike LaFleur.
Through four games, he has recorded just five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown. Those numbers are a considerable drop from the production expected of a receiver selected among the top players in his draft class.
His limited opportunities have also raised questions about how he fits into Arizona's offensive plans.
During his rookie campaign in 2024, Harrison caught 62 passes for 885 yards and eight touchdowns. All three figures remain career highs.
He appeared to have the potential to become a leading target in the Cardinals' passing attack, but injuries interrupted his progress the following season.
Michael Wilson Emerges as a Key Target
Harrison's reduced involvement has coincided with the growing importance of Michael Wilson in Arizona's passing game.
Wilson enjoyed the most productive season of his career last year, finishing with 78 receptions for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns. His performances helped establish him as the team's second receiving option behind star tight end Trey McBride.
That role has continued under LaFleur. Wilson has recorded 25 receptions and one receiving touchdown this season while leading the team with 258 receiving yards.
Veteran slot receiver Kendrick Bourne has also received more opportunities than Harrison. Bourne has registered 12 catches for 108 yards, putting him ahead of Harrison in the team's receiving hierarchy.
With several other players contributing to the offense, Harrison has found it difficult to secure a regular role.
Cardinals Face a Decision on Harrison's Future
Although Harrison remains a talented young receiver, his declining involvement could affect his trade value. The longer he remains outside the main offensive plans, the more difficult it may become for Arizona to secure the return it wants.
According to Pelissero's report, Harrison still has approximately $6.3 million in guaranteed money remaining on his contract, along with a team option for the 2028 season.
That contractual situation could influence how interested teams evaluate a potential deal.
The Cardinals must weigh the value of keeping a player they selected fourth overall against the possibility of receiving draft compensation while other teams remain interested. Trading him could allow Arizona to recover some of its investment rather than risk losing him without receiving anything in return later.
At the same time, Harrison's age, draft pedigree and flashes of potential as a rookie could make him an appealing option for a team seeking to strengthen its receiving group.
Trade Destination Remains Unclear
For now, the identity of Harrison's reported potential destination remains unknown. Houston has been mentioned in connection with the discussions, while Indianapolis has reportedly ruled itself out.
The preference to withhold the destination until the conclusion of the teams' Week 5 games has added to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
If a trade moves forward, it could represent a significant change for both Harrison and the Cardinals. For Arizona, the decision would mean moving on from a high-profile draft pick after a relatively short period. For Harrison, a move could offer an opportunity to restart his career with a team prepared to give him a larger role.
Until the teams or reliable league sources confirm a deal, however, the reported trade should be treated as unconfirmed.
