Samsung and Google Increase Prices of Their Affordable Smartphones

Shoppers looking for an affordable smartphone may now have to spend more, as both Samsung and Google have increased prices on several of their budget-friendly devices.

Industry reports suggest the price hikes are linked to the ongoing global memory chip shortage, which has pushed up production costs across the technology sector. As a result, consumers are seeing higher prices on entry-level and mid-range smartphones from both companies.

Samsung Raises Prices Across Galaxy A Series

Samsung has increased prices on multiple models in its popular Galaxy A lineup, marking another round of adjustments after earlier increases this year.

The updated prices include:

- Galaxy A17 5G: increased from $200 to $270
- Galaxy A27 5G: increased from $350 to $380
- Galaxy A37 5G: increased from $450 to $490
- Galaxy A57 5G: increased from $550 to $600

Depending on the model, buyers are now paying between $30 and $70 more than before.

The Galaxy A series has long been one of Samsung’s most successful smartphone ranges, offering a balance of features and affordability. However, the latest adjustments mean consumers will need larger budgets to purchase these devices.

Google Increases Pixel 10a Price

Google has also raised the price of its budget-focused Pixel 10a smartphone.

The device originally launched at $499, but its starting price has now climbed to $599, representing a $100 increase.

While the Pixel 10a remains one of the more affordable options in Google's smartphone portfolio, the higher price tag reduces some of the value that helped make the device attractive to budget-conscious buyers.

The increase appears even more significant in Canada, where the handset reportedly moved from CAD 679 at launch to CAD 849.

Why Are Prices Going Up?

The primary factor behind these increases appears to be the ongoing shortage and rising cost of RAM components used in smartphones and other electronic devices.

Manufacturers across the tech industry have been facing higher component costs, and many companies are now passing some of those expenses on to consumers through higher retail prices.

Analysts believe the situation may not improve quickly. While some forecasts suggest memory supply could stabilize within the next year as production expands, others warn that elevated prices may continue for several years.

What It Means for Consumers

The latest increases could make it harder for buyers to find truly affordable smartphones, particularly in the entry-level and mid-range segments.

If current market conditions continue, future generations of budget phones may launch at similarly higher prices rather than returning to previous levels.

For consumers looking to save money, refurbished and used devices may become increasingly attractive alternatives as new smartphone prices continue to climb.

Looking Ahead

With both Samsung and Google raising prices on some of their most affordable devices, the era of low-cost smartphones may be becoming more challenging. As manufacturers deal with higher production expenses and supply chain pressures, consumers could continue seeing price increases across the smartphone market in the months and years ahead.
