UK, France and Canada Announce Plans to Restrict Trade With Israeli Settlements

 

Israel has announced plans to shut down Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem, marking a further escalation in diplomatic tensions following recent moves by the United Kingdom, France, and Canada to limit trade involving Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also stated that Britain would not be included in a US-led coordination mission related to Gaza. He further indicated that certain British officials, along with some other foreign nationals, could face restrictions on entering Israel.

The three countries recently introduced measures aimed at discouraging the expansion of Israeli settlements and reaffirming support for a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israeli authorities criticized the decision, arguing that such actions amount to external interference in matters they consider sensitive and complex.

While the diplomatic dispute has attracted international attention, analysts note that the direct economic impact may be limited, as exports from Israeli settlements account for only a small portion of Israel’s overall trade volume.

The latest developments highlight growing differences between Israel and several Western allies over policies related to settlements and the future of the peace process in the region.
