Punjab Police Officers to Be Equipped With Body Cameras Under New Accountability Initiative

Punjab Police Begin Using Body Cameras to Boost Transparency and Accountability

Punjab has started equipping police officers with body-worn cameras as part of ongoing efforts to improve transparency, strengthen accountability, and modernize law enforcement across the province.

The project has been launched initially in Lahore under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. It includes personnel from several departments, including Punjab Police, the Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force, and traffic wardens.

The body cameras come with advanced technology designed to assist officers during duty. Features include audio and video recording, facial recognition, vehicle number plate detection, live monitoring, emergency alerts, push-to-talk communication, and an SOS function.

Officials say the devices will be linked to Safe City networks operating in 43 cities across Punjab. This integration will allow authorities to monitor activities in real time and use recorded footage to support policing operations and internal oversight.

Under the new system, officers must return their cameras at the end of each shift. The devices will then be placed in designated docking stations, where all recorded footage and data will be securely uploaded and stored.

Authorities believe the initiative will help improve public trust, ensure greater transparency during police interactions, and provide better monitoring of field operations through the use of modern technology.
