University of Mississippi Identifies Two Students Found Dead as Kratom Questions Emerge
The University of Mississippi has identified two students who were found dead earlier this week in separate incidents, as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The students were named as Aidan Hamilton, 18, a freshman from Englewood, Colorado, and Robert Strang, 20, a junior from Atlanta, Georgia.
According to university officials, both students were found deceased on Monday. One was discovered on the Ole Miss campus, while the other was found elsewhere in the city of Oxford.
Investigators said packaged kratom was recovered during both investigations. However, officials emphasized that no confirmed connection has been established between kratom and either death, and the causes remain under investigation.
Kratom is a plant-based substance that is sometimes marketed for pain relief, anxiety management, and assistance with drug dependence. Depending on the amount consumed, it can produce either stimulant-like or sedative effects.
In a statement, Robert Strang’s family said they were devastated by the loss of their son and thanked friends and relatives for their support during a difficult time.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of our dear son, Robert, and are trying to process this unimaginable loss,” the family said, while also requesting privacy as they grieve.
Aidan Hamilton’s family described him as a bright and caring young man whose life ended far too soon. They also expressed gratitude for the support they have received and asked for privacy.
University officials have urged students and the public to avoid spreading rumors while investigations are ongoing.
Shawnboda Mead, the university’s vice chancellor for student affairs, said there has been significant public interest in the cases but warned against sharing unverified information.
“We understand that people want answers, but it is important not to spread information that has not been officially confirmed,” Mead said, adding that the causes of both deaths have not yet been determined.
Phi Delta Theta fraternity confirmed that Robert Strang was a member and extended condolences to both families.
The fraternity described the deaths as a tragic loss for the university community and offered sympathies to the students’ relatives, friends, classmates, and everyone affected by the news.
Authorities continue to investigate both cases, and officials have not released any conclusions regarding the cause of death.
