Ferran Torres Helps PSG Secure First Ligue 1 Win of the Season
Paris Saint-Germain finally opened their Ligue 1 account with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brest on Sunday, thanks to another impressive performance from summer signing Ferran Torres.
The defending French champions had endured a surprisingly slow start to the league campaign, collecting only two points from their opening three matches. However, after a dominant 6-1 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava in midweek, Luis Enrique’s side carried that momentum into their trip to Brest.
Torres, who joined PSG from Barcelona during the summer transfer window, continued his fine form by scoring the game's only goal. The Spanish forward, fresh from a hat-trick in the Champions League, struck in the fifth minute after being set up by a clever backheel from Ousmane Dembele. Torres calmly curled his effort into the bottom corner, leaving goalkeeper Egil Selvik with no chance.
The goal marked Torres’ sixth strike in just five appearances for PSG across all competitions, further highlighting his strong start to life in Paris.
Speaking after the match, Torres said his main focus is helping the team succeed, whether through goals, assists, or contributions elsewhere on the pitch.
Brest entered the match unbeaten and made life difficult for the visitors. Before kickoff, the club paid tribute to former coach Eric Roy, who passed away in June after battling pancreatic cancer.
PSG had opportunities to extend their lead, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia coming close during an entertaining first half. However, the visitors also suffered a setback when Achraf Hakimi was forced off injured shortly before halftime.
The hosts nearly found an equalizer early in the second half when Kamory Doumbia was gifted a chance after a defensive mistake, but his shot struck the post. Brest also put the ball into the net later in the match, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a foul in the buildup.
Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov played a crucial role in preserving PSG’s lead, producing a vital late save to deny Pathe Mboup and ensure all three points for the visitors.
The victory lifts PSG into the top half of the Ligue 1 table and provides a much-needed boost as they look to defend their domestic crown while pursuing another successful European campaign.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Lille climbed to the top of the standings with a 2-0 victory over Troyes. Ethan Mbappe, younger brother of Kylian Mbappe, came off the bench to score late in the match, bouncing back from the red card he received in Lille’s midweek Champions League defeat to Real Betis.
The win moved Lille level on points with Monaco and Rennes but ahead on goal difference. Under new coach Davide Ancelotti, the son of Carlo Ancelotti, Lille have made an impressive start to the season with 10 points from their first four matches.
Meanwhile, RC Lens continued their inconsistent domestic form after being held to a 2-2 draw by newly promoted Le Mans. Despite some notable results in other competitions, Lens have collected just four points from their opening four league games and currently sit 10th in the standings.
