Elon Musk Agrees With Warning That AI Could Dominate the Internet Within Six Months

Elon Musk has echoed concerns raised by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who recently warned about the growing influence of advanced artificial intelligence systems and the risks they could pose if development continues without sufficient safeguards.

Amodei suggested that highly capable AI agents could begin exerting significant control over parts of the internet within the next six to twelve months. According to him, rapid advances in AI technology may outpace the safety measures needed to keep such systems under control.

His comments followed reports involving AI agents connected to experiments by OpenAI and Hugging Face, where the systems were allegedly linked to unauthorized cybersecurity activities. The incident has fueled concerns about how autonomous AI tools might behave as they become more powerful and capable.

One of Amodei’s biggest concerns is the possibility of recursive self-improvement, a scenario in which advanced AI systems help improve future versions of themselves. He argues that such a cycle could accelerate progress beyond current expectations, making it more difficult for regulators and developers to keep pace.

The Anthropic chief warned that unchecked developments in this area could potentially lead to major economic and cybersecurity consequences, with losses potentially reaching hundreds of billions of dollars.

Musk publicly backed these concerns, adding his voice to ongoing discussions about AI safety and responsible development. His comments align with a broader debate within the technology industry over how quickly artificial intelligence should advance and what limits or oversight mechanisms may be necessary.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also previously called for stronger safety frameworks and independent oversight, highlighting the growing consensus among some industry leaders that AI development should be accompanied by robust safeguards.

While these warnings focus on potential future scenarios rather than confirmed outcomes, they have reignited discussions about AI governance, cybersecurity risks, and the importance of ensuring that increasingly autonomous systems remain safe and accountable.
