Tanner McKee Set for First Meaningful NFL Start as Jalen Hurts Sits Out
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee is expected to start Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers after Jalen Hurts was ruled out because of a blood clot. The matchup will give McKee his first real opportunity to lead the Eagles in a meaningful NFL regular-season game.
Although McKee has started two games in his career, both came in Week 18 over the past two seasons. By that stage, Philadelphia had already secured its playoff position and chose to rest Hurts and several other key players.
As a result, McKee has yet to take the field as the Eagles’ starting quarterback in a competitive regular-season game that carries significant stakes. Sunday’s matchup will be an important test of his readiness for the role.
Eagles May Look for Another Backup Quarterback
Philadelphia previously had an experienced backup in Andy Dalton, but the team released him last week, before Hurts’ blood clot diagnosis became known.
With Hurts unavailable, bringing Dalton back could be an option for the Eagles as they look to strengthen their quarterback depth. His experience could provide valuable support if the team decides it needs another reliable option behind McKee.
The only other quarterback currently on the roster is Cole Payton, a fifth-round rookie. Payton has shown promise, but he started just one season at North Dakota State and is not widely viewed as someone ready to take charge of an NFL offense immediately.
Can Tanner McKee Handle the Pressure?
McKee now has a chance to prove that he can perform when the stakes are higher. His previous starts came in games where the Eagles had little to gain in terms of their playoff position, making Sunday’s challenge very different.
Facing the Panthers will give the young quarterback an opportunity to demonstrate his decision-making, composure and ability to manage Philadelphia’s offense under pressure.
Whether McKee can make the most of this opportunity remains to be seen. Sunday’s game should provide a clearer picture of how prepared he is to step into a larger role with the Eagles.
