Lahore has recorded a noticeable improvement in air quality, moving to 17th place on IQAir’s live list of the world’s most polluted major cities. The city’s latest Air Quality Index (AQI) reading stands at 89, placing it in the “moderate” category.
The updated figures suggest that Lahore’s air is currently cleaner than that of some other major cities in the region. According to the latest readings, Dubai recorded an AQI of 102, while Riyadh stood at 99, both higher than Lahore’s current level.
Environmental experts believe recent weather conditions may have played a key role in the improvement. Rainfall, favorable wind patterns, and other atmospheric changes can help disperse pollutants, leading to better air quality for short periods.
While the latest readings are encouraging, pollution remains a major challenge for Lahore. Emissions from vehicles, industrial operations, construction activities, and other urban sources continue to affect the city’s environment and public health.
Authorities have also continued implementing anti-smog measures ahead of the winter months, a period when air pollution levels often increase due to weather conditions that trap pollutants closer to the ground.
Experts say lasting improvements will require long-term solutions rather than temporary weather-related relief. Measures such as expanding public transport, promoting electric vehicles, improving traffic management, and enforcing stricter industrial and vehicle emission standards could help reduce pollution levels over time.
Although the recent improvement offers some positive news, maintaining cleaner air in Lahore will depend on sustained environmental policies and continued efforts to tackle the city’s pollution challenges.
